Palace
Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the monarch and the backdrop to the Changing of the Guard and royal balcony appearances. It is a pleasant 15-minute walk from Westminster Station through St James’s Park.
Built as Buckingham House in 1703 and greatly enlarged in the 19th century, the palace became the main royal home when Queen Victoria moved in. The famous east front, with its balcony, faces The Mall and the white marble Victoria Memorial.
When the monarch is in residence, the Royal Standard flies above the palace. When the monarch is away, the Union Flag flies instead.
